All About Mylar

Balloons can add a festive feeling to just about any party or family gathering, and in order to get more bang for your buck, you’re going to want to choose a material that will last. Standard balloons might last for the day, and that’s great if that’s all you’re looking for. But if you want your balloons to last a bit longer, make sure that you purchase Mylar balloons. Mylar is known for its tensile strength as well as its dimensional stability.

Known by other names, the material is sometimes called boPET, or biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate. Because that’s a bit of a mouthful, it is most commonly called Mylar or Melinex. A relatively new material, it has only been around since the 1950s. It was developed by a company known as DuPont and Imperial Chemical Industries. Before it was widely used for commercial reasons, NASA utilized this material in a 1960 and 1964 launch.

xmas.jpgPeople typically break out the balloons for events such as birthdays, graduations, weddings, and anniversaries. But you rarely see them around Christmas time. When you really think about it, though, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Christmas is one of the most heavily decorated and celebrated events. Why not have a few holiday-themed balloons strewn around the house beside the lights, figurines, and bells?

Christmas balloons are also a good option for decorations because mylar balloons can decorate as long as you want them to. Mylar balloons can last up to 2 weeks without needing to be refilled with helium. If you put them around the house Christmas Eve, they should look fantastic all the way through your New Year’s Celebration, if you want them to, if not, take them down with out all the hassles of ladders and storage!

Look around, and you’ll find all kinds of patterns. Snowmen, gingerbread men, snowflakes, mistletoe, holly, and Santa are all common designs.

If you’re throwing a holiday party, attach these balloons to your mailbox. It will help direct newcomers to your home. Also great as a host/hostess gift when tied to fresh flowers, homemade candy, etc. Or deliver some to your local nursing home, hospital to delight and decorate the residents.

Welcome to A Family Affair Craft Boutique and our first post.

We thought that we would start our blog by telling you a little bit about our business.

The “we” speaking are the owners of A Family Affair Craft Boutique, Mom-Athlyn and Daughter- Melissa.

We are located in downtown Kersey, Colorado. We have officially been A Family Affair Craft Boutique for 12 years now. We moved into our first location in 1996. Before that it was my mom’s business called Rainbow Crafts Etc. She ran this business out of the front of my dad’s office and sold her punch needle embroidery supplies when she was a distributor and then later sold her handmade crafts and a few latex and mylar balloons.
I started doing crafts to make extra money my first year of college and soon my mom was taking more of my stuff to craft shows than hers, so we talked about having a home show at my house in Kersey. Well, my dad overheard the conversation and came up with the idea that we just open a store. So that’s how A Family Affair was born. We decided on the name because we depend on our family and friends so much to help. From remodeling our new location, to helping us make craft items, to filling in when we need a rare day off, or have another commitment, we can always count on our family and friends to step in and truly make it A Family Affair!
